Homemade Sugared Donuts

The story behind

There is nothing like the taste of a freshly made donut at home. I love the lightness of the dough and how the granulated sugar clings to the still-warm surface, creating that characteristic texture seen in this presentation. It is a dessert that evokes comforting snacks.

Instructions

  1. 1
Dissolve the yeast and a tablespoon of sugar in the warm milk; let it rest until bubbly.
  2. 2
In a large bowl, mix the flour, the remaining sugar, salt, egg, butter, and the yeast mixture.
  3. 3
Knead until the dough is smooth and elastic. Let it rise in a warm place until doubled in size.
  4. 4
Roll out the dough and cut circles with a center hole to shape the donuts.
  5. 5
Let the cut donuts rest for another 30 minutes.
  6. 6
Fry in hot oil over medium heat until golden brown on both sides.
  7. 7
Drain excess grease and, while still warm, toss them in granulated sugar to achieve the finish in the photo.
