The story behind
I used to think of this as just a 'rice bowl' until a friend showed me the proper way to eat it: you have to mix it thoroughly until the red pepper paste coats every single grain. It’s a dish that dates back to the Joseon Dynasty and represents the balance of the five elements through its colors. It's my go-to healthy lunch when I want something filling but fresh. It pairs wonderfully with a side of spicy cucumbers and, for a drink, a chilled Sikhye (sweet rice drink) or a simple green tea. It’s best enjoyed at midday to give you that clean energy for the rest of the day.
Instructions
-
1Lightly sauté each vegetable individually with a drop of sesame oil to preserve their distinct flavors and textures.
-
2Flash-fry the beef strips with minced garlic and a splash of soy sauce over high heat until browned.
-
3Scoop hot rice into a large bowl and arrange the colorful vegetables and meat in a beautiful circular pattern on top.
-
4Add the egg to the center—the yolk will act as a creamy binder for the whole dish.
-
5Before eating, add the Gochujang sauce and mix everything together vigorously so the heat and flavors meld perfectly.
